Oh, I definitely think if the show hadn't been cancelled Ace would have ended up a Time Lady - didn't even some production people say that had been the plan? Also - bearing in mind I still have gaps in my DW knowledge, i.e. am missing some late First Doctor Companions and some Second Doctor ones, for example - I think the argument could be made Ace is the only time we see the Doctor consciously and deliberately mentoring someone in order to achieve her potential. I mean, yes, of course, that's what most Companions do while hanging out with the Doctor, but most of the time it comes across as a by-product. Not as a goal he has in mind. But with Ace, the Doctor did, and Fenric embodies why that's so brilliant and horrible at the same time.
