Archive of Our Own plus some babble
For anyone who has been following the progress of the Archive of Our Own project, there is a very interesting post in
otw_news about the organisation and so on for the project: http://community.livejournal.com/otw_news/10668.html
The Organisation for Transformative Works has been set up as the 'umbrella' organisation that everything runs through and it's interesting to see who is involved and what they're planning. I'm going to be really interested to see what happens in fandom over the next year or so.
As for the babble...I may be doing something stupid tomorrow.
My work colleagues eventually settled on clay pigeon shooting as our 'fun' activity. I've said that I'll do it and try to join in because, to be honest, it was about the only activity that we could get organised in the time we had that wasn't guaranteed to cripple me. Or so I thought.
Mum and Da sat me down tonight and asked me whether I'm really, really sure that I can do this. They're concerned that the kick from the gun might not only hurt my back (something that I'd already considered) but also dislocate my shoulder. That one I'd only considered jokingly, but I'm now wondering.
It's not something that I can easily back out of, though. What I will do is have a word with the instructor before we start and, if he thinks there's a risk, I'll just trail along and watch the others do their thing. I can wave pom-poms and shout excitedly if they actually hit the clay thingy. I may also have a word with the girl organising it to make sure they won't get hit financially if I do have to back out.
I just hate the idea of having to put a dampener on things when there is practically no group activity that I can join in with for these things. Sometimes I worry that I'm always saying "No, I can't, my back/hip/shoulder/knee" all the time which is the main reason why I've agreed to do this. Sometimes, having a wonky body sucks big time.
Still, they're also feeding me so it's not all bad!

On the other hand, it sounds really fun. (What can I say? I like shooting big guns at not!living things. ;-)
Oh! Do you have a shoulder brace or something you could wear to help provide support?

And it was really good fun :-)

Da Boss suggested climbing Snowdon, which I replied to enthusiastically because walking (even uphill) is one of the few active activities that I can still do. He confessed later than he'd suggested it as a joke assuming that I'd immediately protest and was a little horrified to realise that he might actually have to do it...
Heh heh :-D

(I was rubbish shooting clays - always missed the first one, usually got the second once I knew where they were coming from then missed the rest thinking too much about how to hit them... :-)

Just ignore the burst capillaries on my shoulder. I get those from carrying heavy bags or lying down, so I don't know why I'm so surprised to see them.

Clay pigeon shooting sounds really cool. But your best bet is probably to speak to the people doing it, they'll know best what the effects of doing it are.

Er, oops. After Strikethrough and Boldthrough, a group of fans started considering how to set up a fanfic archive that wouldn't have the legal problems of LJ or the restrictions of FF.net. The project is called An Archive of Our Own.
Out of that discussion, it was decided to set up a non-profit organisation to ensure that everything was legal and the project didn't rely on one person doing everything. Along the way, it was decided to look at some other projects such as setting up a legal defence fund for fans needing to defend against copyright suites and trying to create a journal to document fan history. The Organisation for Transformative works is the non-profit organisation that will be working on all of these projects and they've been making announcements about the organisational structure and time-lines this week. The interesting thing is find out how many fans are, in fact, have rather impressive credentials as well as being well known fan-writers.
It's a project that I'm very interested in watching and has the potential to usher in some fairly major changes to fandom. Whether all those changes will be for the good of fandom will be interesting.

I talked to the guys running the session and they sorted me out with a light, low-recoil gun that didn't hurt me. Yay! It was good fun :-)
